Thursday 9pm

Vice Presidential debate.
Let the slaughter begin.
And remember, you can't spell slaughter without 'laughter'.

Truffle Shuffle

Meant to link to this when I referred to it in the nano post. Classic movie.

Mass. D.O.T.

On a recent trip through Massachusetts:
6 lane highway (3 in each direction)

These were the traffic signs:
Right Lane Closed Ahead
...less than 1/2 mile later...
Left Lanes Closed Ahead

No one on the road had any idea where to go, since, according to the signage, ALL lanes ahead were closed!
Once we finally did see which lane ahead was closed (turns out, only the right one), all the traffic was bottle necked. Good times.

The new Nano

Apple's new iPod Nano:
Back to the old shape- much better than the square-pat-of-butter style.
New colors- look less like Easter.
The coolest feature?

You can give the iPod the truffle-shuffle and it skips to a different song.
Neat technology.

Death Magnetic

The new album comes out tomorrow. Circuit City has it for only $8.99. Here's a link to some samples to whet your appetite. So far, this one sounds much better than St. Anger and more like Load, the Black Album, or Justice.

A flawed system

'Dunkin' Dignitary' is the name of the new system at one of the local Dunkin' Donuts near me.

D.D. is my daily stop on my commute home, since 1. I'm way too cheap for Starbucks (and one is not on my daily commute route) and 2. there is no Brewed Awakenings in Maine.

If you're a regular there, you can get a number assigned to you (hence the term "Dunkin' Dignitary") which correlates to your usual order (ie- medium iced coffee, regular).
Now, this "system" sounds great on paper- the idea is to help speed up your time at the drive through.
However, when put in the hands of morons, it all falls apart.

Here's how a conversation should go:
"Thank you for choosing Dunkin' Donuts; would you like to try a combo today?"
"No. Number 167 please."
"Thanks, drive on up."
- Quick, easy, painless.

But, here's how it typically goes:

"Thank you for choosing Dunkin' Donuts; would you like to try a combo today?"
"No. Number 167 please."
"Number 167?"
"Yes"
"Will there be anything else today?"
"No"
"I'll have your total at the window; come on up."

Sometimes, they like to throw in this curveball:
"Number 167? Medium iced coffee, regular cream and sugar?"

Okay. Why the need to confirm the details of my order? Wasn't that why numbers were assigned? This isn't speeding up the process at all.
You saying "medium iced...sugar" takes the same amount of time as me saying "medium iced...sugar".
Don't repeat my order to me.

And, for god's sake, don't strike up conversation through the drive through speaker- which is what happened today.
"And how are you today?", the woman said.

Let's see...I'm stuck here talking to you through a speaker on a pole. How am I? Not great lady, not great.

I'm in the drive through for a reason. I am avoiding personal interaction to speed the process up. Stop slowing me down and make my coffee.

Chair redo

Our Sunday project: to re-fabric Jillian's office chair.

Total time: approx. 2 hours.

Tools: For the staple gun, I would suggest using a "heavy duty" staple gun instead of the "light duty" one we used as the staples did not always go all the way into the wood and had to be hammered in the rest of the way.

Before:

Step 1: Unbolt the back and seat of the chair from the frame,
then pop off (and unscrew) the plastic backing from cushion.

Step 2: Wrap fabric around the cushion, staple into the wood,
while a second person holds the fabric tight.

Here is what the back of the cushion should look like, before
re-attaching the plastic backing:

Step 3: Snap the plastic backing onto the chair back and seat,
re-bolt to the chair frame.

After:

Looks like a brand new chair, and she loves it. :)

She'll make ya toast

While listening to WHSN and paying bills this afternoon, this song came on. Man, haven't heard that one since high school.

The Providence Place mall gets violated

Two people choose to live in the mall.

Their website "advertising" the unique living space.

A friend of mine recently introduced me to this graphic artist. He uses a computer program to create images that depict our society. You really need to visit his website to get the full effect.

Make Their Day

"Make Their Day" is part of the Fish Philosophy we use at my school.
Just when you thought a co-worker had been judging you all along- they go and say "you have no idea how delighted I am to see you back. I thought you were headed off for a different job."- that made my day. :)

Err...

2nd job

When talking to one of my students recently, I asked how her mom was doing and how her job was going.

She said "Mom is good; she has two jobs now.".

"Really? She must have been awfully busy this summer. What does she do for her second job?"

"She kind of plans parties, and runs them too."

"Like, a catering business?"

"No, not really."

Innocent and oblivious, the student continued- "Mom said 'these types of parties would be a lot of fun for Bachelorette parties'."

I did all I could to keep from laughing my ass off.

You think your recess duty is rough...

From the teacher's handbook at the middle school where I'm employed: "Students will have outside recess if the temperature is above 20 degrees". Didn't notice that in there last year.
